Description

Merits has been first started in Taiwan in 1986 and expanded into the U.S.A. in 1989. They specialize in selling mobility scooters, electric wheelchairs, and stairlifts. They've been a respected name in the industry for decades known for their fast shipping, reliable products, and great support.

Their mission is to enhance independence and accessibility for all—empowering people to live life to the fullest with reliable, purpose-built products designed for comfort, confidence, and long-lasting performance.

You can learn more about what they sell by clicking here.

Heavy-duty capacity with room for longer trips

The Merits Pioneer 9 is a heavy-duty three-wheel scooter built around a 500 lb weight capacity, substantial seating, and an up to 32-mile driving range. Its one-piece frame and suspension system give it a more substantial design than a portable travel scooter, making it better suited to everyday use where capacity, range, and ride support matter more than easy vehicle loading.

Its three-wheel configuration also keeps the turning radius to 50 inches, giving the Pioneer 9 greater maneuverability than Merits' comparable four-wheel Pioneer 10.

A spacious captain's seat with multiple adjustments

The Pioneer 9 uses a 22" wide × 20" deep × 22" high sliding captain's seat, providing considerably more seating space than a typical travel scooter. The swivel design helps with getting on and off, while the seat can slide to adjust your position relative to the tiller.

A hydraulic, angle-adjustable tiller provides another adjustment point, helping position the controls around your preferred reach.

Suspension and larger wheels for a more substantial ride

A built-in suspension system helps absorb surface irregularities for a smoother ride. The Pioneer 9 also provides 4 inches of ground clearance, giving it considerably more clearance than lower-profile travel scooters.

The Pioneer 9 uses 10-inch flat-free front tires and 12.5-inch flat-free drive tires, providing larger wheels without the need to monitor tire pressure

Designed around extended everyday travel

With up to 32 miles of range per charge, the Pioneer 9 can accommodate longer days of use without being centered around frequent recharging. It uses two 75Ah Group 24 AGM batteries, a 400W 24V motor, and a Dynamic Rhino2 160A controller.

The maximum speed is 6 mph, while the 12-degree maximum gradient and 4-inch ground clearance provide support in hilly terrain and traversing obstacles.

Automatic speed reduction supports controlled turning

The Pioneer 9 includes a half-speed inhibit switch that automatically reduces speed during turns. This is particularly useful on a larger, heavier scooter where controlled cornering matters.

It also comes equipped with headlights, taillights, turn signals, and hazard lights, adding integrated visibility and signaling equipment for everyday operation.

Built with practical protection and storage in mind

A reinforced steel front bumper helps protect the scooter's front shroud, while a front shopping basket provides convenient storage for smaller belongings.

The Pioneer 9 also includes practical finishing details such as chrome accents and a carpeted floor mat, complementing its larger captain's-seat design and substantial one-piece frame. The one-piece construction means this scooter is intended to remain assembled rather than break down for transport like a portable model.

A heavy-duty scooter that favors capacity, range, and comfort over portability

At approximately 249 lbs total, with a 101 lb heaviest component, the Pioneer 9 is a substantially larger scooter than a portable model. Its strengths are instead its 500 lb capacity, spacious 22-inch seat, suspension, long driving range, large wheels, and 50-inch turning radius.

For everyday trips where those capabilities matter more than frequent lifting or disassembly, the Pioneer 9 offers a distinctly heavy-duty approach while retaining the maneuverability advantages of a three-wheel layout. If you want to transport it more regularly, a compatible vehicle lift can make loading and traveling with the scooter much more practical without requiring you to manually lift its heavier components.
